of PERMANENT .**************************************** SELF-MOTIVATION SCIENCE NEWS! Last time we talked about stopping your negative thought patterns in their
tracks! We want to let those highways of negative neuron patterns get full
of potholes from non-use and overgrown with thick weeds so that your
‘thoughts’ can’t get down that road as easy as before! (Scientifically, by
doing this we are raising the firing threshold of those negative
patterns.) This time we want to talk in more detail about replacing those negative neuron pattern country roads with positive neuron patterns of “Superhighways for Success”! (Science for Success Technique #3) You learn new habits by techniques of repetition, association, and emotion. This can be greatly accelerated by a technique that most of you have heard of, called self-talk or affirmations. But before now, it is unlikely that you knew or understood why and how these work. THEY DO WORK! If you force yourself for three to four weeks, 3-5 times a day, EVERY day, to concentrate on and “act-out” positive thoughts, you are creating each day a lower firing threshold for these positive highways, and before long, your positive thoughts become automatic, not requiring more than maintenance levels of effort to stay on the positive SuperSuccess highway! If things were only that easy… We all know nothing good ever comes easy. You see, our self-talk needs to be in a very specific format to be effective. (Science for Success Technique #3(c). The self-talk must be in the present tense, it must be believable, and it must be couched in an image that I call a positive positive picture. The research of Dr. Larry Cahill (see last newsletter) and others, has found that the brain, in its neuron patterns, sees things in images and pictures. If I were to ask you to close your eyes and think about what you did this morning immediately after you woke up, you would not imagine this in words on a page, but rather in pictures. Why is this important to know? Because scientists have also found and proven that your nonconscious levels of thought (5 out of the six layers of thinking) are not bound by the “same rules as your conscious thoughts. In other words, your conscious thoughts are filtered through reality, deductive reasoning, logic, and moral values before you ‘see’ them. Non-conscious thoughts have no such filters. (Which also helps explain why your nonconscious neuron patterns (thoughts) travel across synapses at a speed 80 to 800 times faster than conscious neuron patterns!) As a result, your nonconscious brain CAN NOT TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WHAT IS REAL AND WHAT IS IMAGINED. It takes as TOTAL REALITY any pictures that you send it. Further, once you direct an image or visualization to your nonconscious levels of your brain, it will work 24 hours a day without sleep, to make that image a reality. How long does it take? Well the image becomes real in 3-4 weeks. The goal itself will become reality, no matter how long it takes after that! Have scientists proven that the nonconscious brain cannot tell the difference between real and imagined? Yes! In a controlled research study, scientists placed groups of people with phobias, such as a fear of snakes, on vital sign monitoring equipment to measure their conscious and nonconscious (automatic) reactions to several slides that they saw on a computer screen. These reactions would be stimulated by the release of hormones in what is called the “fight or flight reaction” to feared realities. When these people were shown for three seconds each, pictures of flowers, snow, mountains, moonlight, even snake pictures, there was no reaction and therefore no release of these hormones. However,
when the test administrators flashed pictures of snakes on the screen at
an enormously fast speed, so fast the tested subjects did not even
consciously know that they saw the pictures (as in the old subliminal
advertising gimmicks), there was a sudden and dramatic release by their
brain of the fight or flight hormones induced by the subjects nonconscious
belief that it had seen a REAL snake! Had these pictures been slowed down,
so that each subject “saw” them with their conscious brain, their more
rational conscious neurons would have told them that this was only a
picture and not a real snake and therefore they did not have to react with
fear hormones and neurotransmitters!!! When we tell our children, “Don’t spill the milk!” what picture does 5/6th of their brain automatically see? That’s right, spilling the milk! If I tell you, “Whatever you do, DO NOT think about
anything RED!” What do you automatically see? The color red! Make your affirmations a positive positive! When you say, I am too fat; therefore I will not eat fatty foods anymore! You are telling 5/6th of your brain to eat fatty foods! What should you say every day for 3-4 weeks? “I AM THIN!” After 3-4 weeks your brain will turn this imagined reality into a truthful one and do everything it its power to reach this goal! I learned this lesson the very hard way several years ago with my youngest son. In high school, my son was (and still is) an excellent golfer, and played on an Orlando high school team that won two state championships. In his Sophomore year, just before the beginning of a very crucial match, on a golf course where the first hole was a difficult par five, with a lake in front of and along the right side of the fairway; dad in his less than scientific mind said to son, “Now whatever you do just don’t go in the water, that would be disastrous!” How stupid was that! I just gave 5/6th of his brain a perfect picture goal of going in the lake!! Which do you think controlled his shot, the 1/6th of his brain that ‘heard’ don’t go in the lake or the 5/6th of his brain that saw a perfect picture goal of going in the lake? That’s right! He hit it into the lake…twice…. (Just like I told him to!) And he took an 11 on the hole and was out of the match! In our Systems we teach you with our Science for Success techniques and
