Therefore we thought the time was appropriate to change the name! Science for Success Systems: Teaching You the Science of Permanent Self-Motivation.

5. Very soon we will be going out to San Diego for the Learning Brain Exposition. I went to this very important conference last year at this time, and brought back tons of extremely valuable information to share with you in our Systems and Seminars

Most of the sessions there are led by neuroscience research MDs and PhDs, and they present their research papers, results and information. I will be sitting in on sessions with some of the greatest brain-research scientists in the world.

Some of their presentations include, "Neurological Syndromes and Brain Capacity"; "Critical Periods for Brain Plasticity";" Neuron Encoding During Sleep"; and "Neurobiological Brain Mechanisms Underlying Memory". I know that all sounds like mumbo-jumbo to you right now, but stay tuned.

It is fantastic stuff that we will pass on to you in the upcoming Newsletters and we will do our best to translate it all into understandable English!

For example, Neuron Encoding simplified means forming new neuron DSP connections...in other words-learning. Can we do this during sleep? You have all heard about the use of "subliminal tapes" under the pillow. But does it work...scientifically?

I'll bring back the answer for you! Plus many other important brain-based findings that can help on your journey toward science-based permanent self-motivation, achievement and success.

6. Make sure you check out the back issues of the Newsletter if you are a recent subscriber! They are all available for you.  Send me an email and I'll get them to you!

7.We are going to increase the number of Newsletters that we publish each year from 12 up to 20 or more. The neuroscience research has been coming fast and furious and we think it will take more issues to get this all to you as soon as possible.

8. This morning I got a short email from my sister. It was just a short note with a quote from Henry Ford that I want to tell you about. He said, "Anyone who stops learning is old, whether twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning today is young. The greatest thing in life is to keep your mind young."

This statement of course was made many years ago; long before the PET scan or MRIs. But the statement has a strong foundation for the Science of Success. If you stop sending neuron impulses down neurode pathways, they become "overgrown with weeds". It becomes harder and harder to get thought impulses to travel that road.

But if you continually try to learn new things, DO new things, you are keeping the neuron highways well paved and easily traveled. So when you set new goals, new levels of achievement and success that you want to reach, it is much easier for you to get there if the pathways are clear and well used.
It doesn't even have to be thoughts and learning's in your chosen goal-field. Anything new, learned, will keep your neurons functioning at top levels. But it requires more than just passive sedentary learning. It requires ACTIVE learning. Combining learning with action. Even if the action step is very very small or tiny. If it's in the right direction, it can keep you going.

Self-Motivation Science News

Ohio State Wins National Championship-Scientifically!

Boy I bet that sounds crazy huh? Well not so fast my friend. Here are the details. ALL related to the Science for Success principles.

As you may know, I am a former Buckeye, (before moving to Florida 15 years ago) having schooled in Ohio for all of my degrees and having my oldest son graduate from OSU.

So it was with more than a passing interest that we watched the National Championship Football game last  year. (In fact I had on my OSU hat, OSU shirt, OSU sweatshirt, my OSU flag on the truck, and forced my wife to wear her OSU scarf.)

It was a fantastic game to see, and in the end, it really didn't matter all that much who won, because it was such a great game to have experienced.

But there is a valuable lesson here I want to tell you about-scientifically. For 12 years, John Cooper was a very successful coach at Ohio State. Every year his football teams were in the top rankings and going for the National Championship.

Every year that is, until Ohio State played Michigan in their final game. Three or four times in fact in the '90s, Ohio State was ranked #1 or #2 and each time Michigan beat them. In fact, John Cooper's record as a coach at OSU, before he was fired 2 years ago, was a very respectable 84-18. A success by most standards. But not everyone is measured by the Ohio State standards for success in football. The bar is very high.

In all those years, watching him coach and watching his teams play, I noticed a very interesting phenomenon. In every game, the Buckeyes were well prepared, well coached, and played to win with a wide-open style of play.
And win they did. Win, that is, until the Michigan game.

Always the last and most important rivalry game of the year, it seemed like that game was the whole season, it was so big. When that game came around, Coach Cooper changed. He became very nervous and tense. In practice he changed his plays to safe low-risk plays for THAT game. He changed his style of coaching from 'coaching to win' to 'coaching not to lose'.

In preparing for and coaching for the Michigan game, Coach Cooper said to his team, "Whatever you do, don't lose this game!" "What ever you do, Don't spill the milk!"

Do you see what happens here? The brain sees in pictures. All of the brain. The 1/6th that is your conscious brain and the 5/6th that is your nonconscious brain, SEES IN PICTURES. Your nonconscious brain is not physiologically able to filter out of its picture, the negatives (see previous Newsletters for scientific explanation). That can only be done at the conscious level.

So while 1/6 of each player's brain could understand and give meaning to Coach Cooper's statements and actions that said "Don't lose this game!"; 5/6 of their brain saw pictures that said, "LOSE THIS GAME!"

If Mathematics (odds) and Neuroscience are automatic, and always certain, the brains of all of the Ohio State players under Coach Cooper, would do what they could to lose that game 5 out of 6 times. Guess what? In the 12 years that Cooper coached OSU, they won the Michigan game 2 times. That's 2 out of twelve; 1 out of 6. Exactly.

Coach Cooper was fired at Ohio State and replaced by Jim Tressel. This was Coach Tressel's second year. Each of those two years his team has beaten Michigan. Each year, he sent pictures to the brains of his players that said "Win this game".

He did not change his coaching style for the Michigan game, nor did he change his coaching style for the National Championship game with the University of Miami Hurricanes, one of the best college football teams ever.

He did not send a picture to the nonconscious brain saying "Don't Lose this game!" He had 6/6ths of his players brains all functioning toward the right picture; the right goal.

How do you coach? Yourself? Your Children? Your employees? Are you always coaching to win, or do you sometimes coach not to lose? When you set goals, when you practice your INNERSTATES (See Science for Success Technique #4), always use a positive positive, never a negative-positive. Coach to win. Don't spill the milk!

Book Reviews

Each Newsletter we will review a few of the books and/or research articles and studies that we have read. All of these books will have been published in just the last few years, since about 95% of what science now knows about the brain has been discovered in just the last 4-5 years! We will rate these books on a scale of 0-10 with ten meaning DON'T MISS IT! and 0 meaning DONT TOUCH IT! All opinions will relate only to the book's quality and functionality as it relates to the FOCUS and MISSION STATEMENT of Science for Success Seminars (see our website)

BOOK REVIEWS:

1. THE TALKING CURE and HALF EMPTY-HALF FULL, both by Susan Vaughn, MD Both of these books are on my recommend list. Although the CURE is sometimes hard to wade through, the message can't be missed. Biological connections between neurons are literally strengthened or forged, weakened or broker: ultimately rewired through the process of TALK. Our job then teaching is to help you reach into your adult networks and disconnect those neurons that link negativity, sadness, losing, etc. The second book follows up on this science theory by emphasizing the necessity for optimism, the NEUROLOGICAL NECESSITY for optimism. Ohio State style!
RATING: 8.2 (both books together)

2. JUMP START YOUR BRAIN and JUMP START YOUR BUSINESS BRAIN both by DOUG HALL. Can I answer that question with both a yes and a no? I kinda love both of these books. Trouble is, the parts of both that I love are more than halfway through each one. But it is worth the trip. The first half of each book discusses the foundation for creativity, imagination, and visualization. Luckily the author agrees with us that this has a very important and clear, neuroscientific base or starting point. But the really good stuff is in the last half of each book. Here are the multiplicity of examples and exercises for you to jump inside your head and create new neurodes for creativity. These are fantastic. Do them! In fact the author claims that if you follow and complete these you can increase your creativity by 500%! Scientifically! RATING: 7.8(both books together)
