B.  Neuroscience Self-Motivation News.

1.  Brain Plasticity. 

We are revisiting this topic because it is so important.  Before the 1990's neuroscientists thought that in general your brain was hard-wired when you were born.  That is, your brain was thought to be fixed with all connections established when you were born.  Your levels of intelligence and capacity to achieve were basically thought to be solely a product of your genes and DNA.

Over the last few years of course, this belief has been totally destroyed by the new neuroscience research findings. 

For example, in 1990, the National Institute of Mental Health did a survey of 1500 neurosurgeons regarding their belief in "Neurogenesis", the brains ability to re-grow or re-wire damaged or destroyed brain-cells (neurons).  Of those 1500 brain doctors, 95% did not think nor did they practice medicine believing that neurogenesis was possibly.

Just 10 years later in 2000, after some phenomenal research discoveries, again 1500 neurosurgeons were interviewed regarding neurogenesis, and this time over 97% of the doctors said yes, neurogenesis is a reality.  Brain cells can and do regenerate with proper therapy.

Last summer we were in Miami, FL teaching a class of builders and contractors, when one of the building professionals in the class said he wanted to recount an unbelievable experience that he had just lived through.  About 4 years prior, he had been diagnosed with a very serious brain tumor.   The doctors at the time thought it would be impossible to operate and remove the tumor since it was located in an area of this man's brain that was so close to the control centers for his vital functions. Surgery would destroy too many of the brain cells in this area and since the common medical belief was that these cells could not regenerate, he he would probably not survive the procedure.  Yet if surgery was not performed, it was just a matter of time anyway, before the tumor would spread into the life controlling areas of his brain, and terminate his life

Our student, who we will call "Tom", did not accept this doctor's opinion and he searched until he found a group of doctors who were aware of the latest neuroscience research findings regarding brain cell regeneration.  These doctors performed the surgery, prescribed the proper therapy to assist his brain to regenerate neurons, and he is back working at his building trade and profession this day!  A very happy man!

These types of discoveries and success stories are not limited to the field of medicine!

YOUR brain is not hard-wired!  You can form new connections in your brain.  Your capacity to achieve great things is not neuroscientifically limited.  It is limited only by your own belief and efforts to TRY!

Another very recent research study, regarding dyslexic children has shown this great possibility as well! In research conducted at Stanford University in California, the results of which were published by the National Academy of Sciences just last month. Dyslexia is a fairly common reading disorder among children.  Previously, it was thought that there was no way to help these students. 

However, through this research, using very new and sophisticated functional MRI brain imagery equipment and training programs, the researchers were able, over time, to help the children (and their brains) to operate more like those of normal readers.

For the first time, researchers have shown that the brains of dyslexic children can be rewired after undergoing training, to function at much greater reading achievement levels

This is Fantastic news for you, no matter what your age!  Your brain can be rewired.  You can learn new things.  You can greatly improve your achievement levels.  You will never again have to say, "I can't help it.  That's just the way I am."

2.  Where did I put my Memory? 

How many of you are worried about gradually losing your memory?  Well first of all, you need to remember to stop worrying about those things you can't control!  But can you control or even improve your memory?  The resounding neuroscientific answer is YES!

Losing your memory seems to be the great terror of our age.  Anxious baby boomers are constantly assessing the fitness of their memory  But one of the great positives about this is that if you take steps to improve your memory, it can be a shortcut to an even more tempting goal: improving your intelligence!

And it is in this area that research is just starting to jump in and find some great results and ideas that can be again applied outside the medical field into the self-motivation and achievement field.

Today in this issue we will be talking about short-term memory, or "working" memory as it is sometimes called.  In future issues we will take a look at long-term memory.

The most important finding from the research is that memory is effected by the usage levels of our neuron patterns.  In other words, if we, as we get older, use certain neuron connections and patterns less and less, those patterns literally atrophy, and it is much more difficult for nerve impulses (thoughts) to go down those pathways.  This is a problem that is absolutely easily remedied!  The old adage, "Use it or lose it!" vital for you.  As we get older, we become more consistent in our daily lives, with certain patterns of activity developing.  We drive on fewer roads, we get stuck in the same rut day after day, the same activities.  This is bad for the brain!  It is like trying to be a world class weightlifter by only exercising your left arm and nothing more. It doesn't work.

What should you do about it?  Get out of your rut.  Drive to work a different way every day.  Read different magazines, take new trips, try new things.  And above all, exercise ALL of your brain. 

Do you read the paper every day?  Read one page upside-down! Get out of your thinking box.  Learn about things you never knew about before.  Practice, Practice, practice!  We have many books in our Annotated Bibliography that will give you over 200 exercises that you can do to keep your brains neuron patterns and connections strong!

Another thing that you can do is get smarter that your brain!  As we get older our brain tries to outsmart us.  It is a biological fact that the brain cannot store energy. It constantly needs to replenish its energy after it performs a given function.

When we get a great idea or thought up from our nonconscious neurons to our conscious level, it is first placed into short-term memory.  Unless this thought or idea is then taken by us and put into long-term memory, the idea will disappear or dissipate within 30 seconds to 12 minutes.  Poof!  Never to be heard from again.

It takes energy to move this thought to long-term memory, and as we get older, our brain tries to get smarter than us and not make this effort.  Our brain is kinda sitting up there in a Lazy-Boy with its feet up and a beer, and doesn't want to use the energy to get up and move your though over to long-term memory.  That takes energy, and the brain no longer wants to be bothered. The brain is getting lazy.

You can fix that!  Check out some of the exercises you can do to get your brain up out of that chair, in the books in our bibliography!

Another outside tool that you can use to GREATLY increase your production, achievement, and success, is a technique that I personally have found to be totally invaluable.

OK so your brain is getting lazy huh?  And the worst about this is that whenever you get those great ideas for solving a problem or making money, your nonconscious brain doesn't care what you're doing at the time.  It just sends the message upstairs to your conscious brain.  And from research, it is now known that every such idea first goes into short-term memory.  This is BAD! You may be too busy at the time to do the things necessary to move it over into long term memory.

Well stop beating yourself up about this!

It has been said that ALL of us, each year, have about 4 ideas, that if we acted upon any one of them with persistence, that idea could make us a million dollars!

So why take the risk of ever losing one of these ideas again?  Do what I have done.  Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, I now have in my possession, a digital voice recorder.  ALWAYS!

Anytime that you get an idea, put it on the recorder, and once a day, or once a week  download it to your computer, and if you have voice recognition software as I have, turn it into text that you can store, read and act upon forever! [so long as the computer doesn't crash and you have it backed up!]

I have found this to be an absolute goldmine idea!  Stop being negative about your memory!  Do something about it!  Exercise that brain!  And implement technology to your advantage.  The science of Permanent Self-Motivation doesn't all have to come from within your brain!  Some of it can come from your Olympus 2000 22 hour voice recorder and IBM ViaVoice Advance Voice Recognition System (About $190 and $100 respectively-check online stores!)

Each month we will review a few of the books and/or research articles and studies that we have read. All of these books will have been published in just the last few years, since about 95% of what science now knows about the brain has been discovered in just the last 4-5 years! Book Reviews:

Exercises for the Whole Brain, Allen D. Brigden, 1999

This is a great "puzzle book" to exercise your brain!  It contains many exercise "neuron-builders" you can use to stimulate your visual, math, and decision-making/problem-solving skills and neurode patterns.

It will help you stop brain aging and improve your creativity and visualization skills.  Use it or lose it!  This author also has a website that is on our good stuff list:   www.mentalmuscle.com   RATING: 8.0

Jump Start Your Brain; Jump Start Your Business Brain.  Doug Hall, 2001

Two Books!  Both filled with good reading on the "how" and "why" you need to use science-based training and techniques to "jump start" your brain, to greatly increase your achievement levels.  Both books find their foundation in the latest neuroscience research, so you know I like them both.

Each book also has some exercises to stimulate and keep young-thinking neurons active in your aging brain, although there are many more in the  first book rather than in the "business brain" book.  RATING(s): 7.5


F.  Science for Success Techniques #8 and #9

8.  MAINTENANCE

Once you have gone through your efforts to take inventory (5days); Stomp the AntZ (21-30 days); set your long and short term goals (7-14 days); practice your Innerstates  (30 uninterrupted-continuous days); Practice your visualization skills and trusting the darkness------it is imperative that you set up a regular maintenance schedule to revisit these on a regular basis, just as you would schedule your automobile for an oil change and tune-up.  Your new neuron patterns will atrophy and die if you do not continuously send impulses down those neurons.  But it no longer needs to be daily efforts so long as you are striving toward your goals each day.  I would suggest once a week you need to do maintenance in all of the first 7 S4S Techniques.  Other laws of science become involved here.  Newton's Laws of Physics clearly indicate that you will not have to exert the same amount of energy, once you have followed the specific rules of the first seven Techniques. (Caution:  see Technique number 9 below, however).  Just make sure that your maintenance levels of effort include visits to ALL of the Techniques equally on a weekly and monthly basis.  Go see, feel and touch your goals every week.  Stop in front of that store mirror and lip-sync your Innerstates!  And with out question the most important maintenance exercise, is to regularly, get outside of the box.  It is my suggestion that every day you do something to get "rewired".  Let your brain know that you are the boss!  That it can't let up!  I get rewired each day by doing something "weird" each day.  To keep the brain young!  Do something every day that you're not expected to!  Wear two different colored socks.  Face the back wall in an elevator!  Wave to someone who doesn't know you.  Just something, anything to keep the lightning in your brain firing!

9.  COMPLETE THE CIRCLE. 

This is my own personal favorite Technique.

A.  Many times as you know, people quit or fall short of their goals just right before they were about to reach the top.  Well that won't happen to you if you practice what you are going to do when you get to the top.  Create those neuron patterns early!  This is so important.  We have had clients who set wonderful goals of doubling their company's business in 5 years.  AND THEY SUCCEEDED!  But their company failed, because they did not PLAN THE FINISH!  If you want to double your business, you also need to plan how many new employees this will take, where will we get them; how much new equipment will we need; how do I set up the financing of that new equipment?  PLAN THE FINISH! Plan as if you could not fail.  What steps are you going to have to make if you do reach your goals.  Plan for it!

B.  Spend some time every week INSIDE YOUR DREAMS AND GOALS.  If one of your goals is a new boat.  Go down and see it, get in it, smell it, touch it, take it for a test spin REGULARLY!  This will bring your goals to life for your nonconscious brain to do all that it can to get you that dream.

C.  Sprint the Backstretch.  In my years of coaching track and field, one of the best athletic tools I ever learned was to "sprint the backstretch".  If you are in a race, many coaches would tell you to "coast" or "glide down the backstretch, so that you have saved something left for the finish.  NO!  Sprint the backstretch!  Your competition won't know what hit them and they will quit before you ever get to the final turn.  If you sprint the backstretch, and you come around that final turn and can SEE the finish line and can HEAR the roar of the crowd, the adrenalin will be pumping in you so strong that it will carry you to the finish.  SPRINT THE BACKSTRETCH!  That is where the race is always won!
