3. Last Month we asked you to send us your questions regarding the neuroscience of Permanent Self-Motivation. The response was overwhelming! We have a ton of fantastic questions. Therefore we have answered below as many as space permits, AND we have listed some questions only, that we want you the readers to send us YOUR IDEAS and ANSWERS! We have published some of the best answers herein. B. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS-PART 2 We are still getting in to our office, some great questions and answers. Keep them coming! Below are some of your questions and subscriber answers, and one or questions that I will tackle! 1. Q. From last newsletter regarding the effects of Prozac, ADD, and the regeneration of brain cells.. A. Nancy Street, Kissimmee, FL writes: These questions about Prozac & ADD are addressed in Daniel Amen's Book.."Change Your Brain-Change Your Life". I am sure these questions are answered in other literature, but Amen's book has the pictures! [Ed. note: This book is one of my top 5 recommended books of all time!] A. Ken Shenkman, Ph. D. writes: I am a new subscriber to your newsletter, and so far, it seems pretty good. I am particularly interested because of my past studies (I have a doctorate in experimental psych with a specialty in cognitive developmental neuroscience) I saw that someone had asked a question about Prozac and its effects on brain connections and though I would take a stab at an answer. As you probably know, for many years it was thought that no new cells grew in the human brain. In the past few years, however, there is good evidence that there is human neurogenesis, specifically in the hippocampus - which plays an important learning and memory. Interestingly, some studies show the people who are depressed tend to have a smaller/non-neurogenic hippocampus. These is also evidence to suggest that when Prozac (or other SSRI medications) are administered to these patients, the rate of new cell growth in the hippocampus increases. This leads to the speculation that one of the ways these medicines may work is to help grow new cells, hence new connections in the brain. While I am certainly not advocating that everyone go out and start taking drugs, it does seem that if someone is diagnosed as clinically depressed, these drugs may do more than we thought... 2. Q. Is it true that music with 60 beats per minute can aid learning? A. Mark Williams, United Kingdom writes: Well, here's my input, for what it's worth.....At laboratories at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and Sofia Medical Institutes, Georgi Lazanov carried out music research. What he called "mathematical"old erosion slow Baroque music could bring students into a state of alert relaxation. With his friend, educator Dr Aleko Novakov, Lazanov pieced together a learning system. They added in everything discovered in the decades of research into suggestion, learning acceleration, and sleep-learning. Just like sleep-learning, they broke up data to be learned into four-second sound bites. Each "data chunk" was no more than seven or eight words. Memory experiments have shown this to be the optimum length. They calculated the ideal number of repetitions, lesson length, sequence, and presentation. How much data could students learn per session? Which music gave the very best results? Tests showed music scored for string instruments rich in the harmonic overtones produce superior results to music scored for brass, horns or pipe organ. Music with the beat of 60 to 64 per minute gave the best results and helped memory improve globally. Slow Baroque could really be called "Super Memory" Music. [Ed. note: It was later found that the 60 beats/minute pace, because it was in line with the resting heart-rate, had a tendency to reduce stress and relax the subject's which put them in a more receptive learning mode.] 3. Question submitted: FAITH? You've talked about Willpower being overrated in your article, which I thought was great. I'd like to know if Faith is overrated as a catch-all strategy for getting goals. I work corporate trainings and I get the impression that sometimes the participants have previous views and beliefs about what works in such a way that it's difficult to show the value of the techniques one can use. Neuroscience shows us that it's not so much about willpower, but rather the perception that makes the difference. What can you answer for your readers about Faith and what (if anything) neuroscience technique is a more effective lever. Arline Davis, Br A. From Doug Bench: To paraphrase your question, "Where does faith fit in to all this neuroscience for self-motivation stuff?" Great Question! First of all, Webster defines FAITH as a confident BELIEF in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing. 1. So faith is a belief. The end goal of ALL self-motivation is ACTION or our BEHAVIOR. This is the step that most effects and directly controls our success or bad results-what we do or don't do. Our Actions! [A series of correct actions strung together equals SUCCESS!} 2. Every action we take is first filtered through our FEELINGS. How we feel about something will always greatly effect or determine what we do and how well we do it. So where do your feelings come from? 3. Your feelings are created, controlled, or determined by your ATTITUDES. This is the perspective from which you view life. Whatever attitude you have will effect how you feel about it, which effects how you act. So where do your attitudes come from? 4. They are no accident; they don't go down neuron patters and appear out of nowhere. They are created, controlled, or influenced entirely by our BELIEFS(faith). What we believe about anything will determine our attitudes about it, creates our feelings and directs our actions. Belief neuron patterns are so powerful they can even make something appear to be something different from what it really is! Belief does not require things to factually be the way we see it! It only requires us to believe that it is! What makes us believe??? Were we born with them? Did they just magically appear? NO! They are no accident of nature. Our beliefs are created and directed entirely by our NEURON PATTERNS. Everything that we accept from the outside world (extrinsic) and everything we have fed ourselves (intrinsic), and have allowed to set up shop in our cortex as stored neuron patters, ALWAYS initiate ALL chain reactions of neuron pattern firings, that we call LIFE! YOUR THOUGHTS ARE REAL THINGS!. CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS-CHANGE YOUR LIFE! 4. Q. I am rebuilding my life after a total meltdown. I lost everything, and I do mean everything. I am trying desperately to change my life and need more help than I have been able to find to do this. I am so behind the 8-ball, it seems. New research proves direct route from the eyes to the Amygdala, without going through your conscious cortex! At a meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society in New York, just this month, a new research study presented findings that verify that there is i direct route from your eyes to the Amygdala, without going through the conscious portion of your cerebral cortex. Why is this so important? WOW! Is it important to what we have been talking about! If you want to be permanently self-motivated, you have got to be able to put your brain on "automatic pilot". You have got to have and develop the mechanisms to insure that your actions are positive and taken whenever possible, without missing anything. This is your best chance to reach long-term success. Without having to consciously force yourself to do things and not procrastinate or give up. We have all suffered from being discouraged and quitting instead of staying stedfast on our journey to our goals. Wouldn't it be great if you could stay the course AUTOMATICALLY? Well you can! In research conducted at NYU, McGill University in Montreal, and The University Medical Center in Geneva, colleagues have reported that certain impulses received by your eyes (certain things that you see) are sent directly to your amygdala instead of to your cortex for further interpretation, analysis, and decision-making. The determining factors upon which impulses are sent directly and which go to the cortex, seems to be based on several factors, but the two most important for us are as follows. If the impulse images are related to any fear or danger-producing past images, they go directly to the amygdala for quick attention and response. Also, images and impulses, for things of great importance to us, likewise are sent to the amygdala for direct, immediate focus, action and attention. In other words, just as when you are hiking quietly in the desert, and you suddenly find yourself gasping and lurching backward in a panic, not immediately knowing why, until you slowly become consciously aware of a snake slithering across the trail, the amygdala is a real lifesaver by causing your reaction before you are even aware of what you saw or why you acted. This same process can be created by you for those things which are important to you, such as elements of your goals, or information that would trigger ACTION on your part to reach your goals. These direct pathways are apparently used for not only impulses warning of danger, but also they can be "trained" to carry images of anything that is 'put on your important list'. This of course, as we have been teaching, can be done by you over a thirty day period by using the 9 Science for Success Techniques. Then, once you have created your important list, you will be much less likely to miss any signal that is within your field of vision that relates to obtaining your goals, even if your conscious focus is on another topic or vision at that time!
