Some time ago in a previous issue of our Newsletter we told of the fascinating very different results that occurred in the growth and learning rate of rats that lived in identical environments in research labs in England and the United States. The two groups of rats were from the same supply house. They were fed exactly the same food and same proportions. They did the same exercises. But the rats in England, strangely, were maturing faster and growing more healthy than the rats in the United States. The scientists were perplexed by this apparent mystery, until they discovered quite by accident the difference! When the maintenance staff for the laboratory in the United States cleaned each rat's cage, they moved each rat to a different cage. In England, when the maintenance staff cleaned the cage of each rat, one of the staff, held the rat in their arms until they were able to return the rat to its clean cage. This touchy-time appeared to be the cause of the more positive weight, health, and maturity in the English rats. The theory being that this touching would cause the release of positive "warm and fuzzy feeling" neurotransmitters in the brains of the English rats, thus creating an environment more conducive to growth and achievement. Are any of you really surprised? Now comes word of more research from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine with correlating results in humans. The experiment under the direction of the Med School researchers had a group of 100 adults hold hands with their mate or partner for a period of 10 minutes while watching a pleasant video. Then each couple hugged for 20 seconds. Another group of 100 watched the same video, without the hand-holding and without the hug. Then each group was asked to talk about an incident that made them very angry and upset. THE RESULTS? Blood Pressure rose dramatically in the group of people who had no contact with their partner-more than double the blood pressure increase of the 'huggers'. The non-huggers also experienced an increased heart rate, double the increased rate of the huggers. This research, along with other studies done at the University of Miami Medical School's Touch Research Institute, concludes that when we touch someone else (an emotional event), it lowers the release in the brain of the stress hormone cortisol. This sets off a chain reaction increase in the good neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine which make us feel really good. Not surprisingly, the touch of a friend was not as effective as the touch of a lover. The researchers also indicate that these benefits from just one such touching experience, can have a day-long positive effect. It has also been shown that if emotions are involved as we learn a new skill, or absorb new information, this positive neurotransmitter release also causes more connections to be made, and stronger connections to be made in your brain relative to these new skills or information, so that the connections (and the learning) will last much much longer than if no emotion were involved. CONCLUSION FOR YOU! If you want to achieve more, and have your efforts last longer, enlist the help of your partner to support you with a kind hand! A friendly touch! A warm hug of love and support. Your brain will form much stronger and longer lasting neuron connections. Your achievements will be much greater! Can we prove this in every-day life? Listen to this seemingly unrelated article I found regarding restaurant server tips. The "How Stuff Works" Website has analyzed how tipping restaurant servers works and what influences tipping. Most of us would conclude that simply good service from an attentive server determines the likely tip. But the research shows other huge influences. 1. If a server leaves you each a piece of candy the average tip increased by 2.7% 2. If a server squatted to your eye level to make eye contact while taking your order and talking to you, the average tip increased by an additional 2.6% 3. If, however, the server touches the customer-a brief hand on the shoulder or back, or hand, the tip increased by a whopping 30%. Now you Know! Can you see ideas on how this can be correlated to your employee's performance, your company's bottom line, your own achievements and motivation? SEND ME YOUR IDEAS! 2. NASA Upside-Down Goggles Experiment Revisited. In a very early NASA experiment that you have probably heard about, they placed convex goggles on astronaut candidates that turned everything they saw upside down. They wanted to test the effects of this spatial disorientation on the astronauts’ bodily systems. Would it make them nauseous, have high blood pressure, etc.? What occurred after three to four weeks was something they did not expect. Each of the astronauts’ brains started to turn everything they saw back right side up; while they were still wearing the goggles! We now know, of course, why this happened. At that time it was a mystery. After three to four weeks, each of their brains had formed enough new DSP connections to turn this lie into the truth. They extended the experiment to learn more about this, and, interestingly, when they completed the experiment and the astronauts took off the goggles, everything turned wrong side up again! Some of the astronauts suffered some emotional harm as a result. As we learn new things, in our brain, new connections are formed, new DSP synaptic connections are formed by repetition, association and emotion. And the more any of these that are involved, the stronger are the connections, and the more connections there are, and the more likely, then, it is that this memory will stay on our “Important List” nearly permanently. All of you have certainly experienced this! For example, how many of you remember exactly where you were last Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., who you were with, what you were wearing, etc.? Yes! None of you do Now, how many of you remember exactly where you were on Friday, November 22nd, 1963? Yes, nearly all of you. Why? Because that was an event that was very emotional for all of us! That was the time that John F. Kennedy was shot. As a result, we formed many more neuron connections during that period. Physiologically, how does this work? We have something in the brain called the amygdala, which controls the release of neurotransmitters. The more emotional an experience, the more neurotransmitters and hormones are released. When these get into the nucleus of each brain cell, it causes the formation of more proteins and calcium build-ups, which acts like a fertilizer for these DSPs to grow. Many more of them will grow and they will be much stronger connections. Therefore, any emotional event will remain as an important memory for much greater periods of time. It will remain on what I call your “Important list” nearly permanently. Get Emotional, and feel the neurons grow! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ C. BOOK REVIEW Each month we will review a few of the books and/or research articles and studies that we have read. All of these books will have been published in just the last few years, since about 95% of what science now knows about the brain has been discovered in just the last 4-5 years! We will rate these books on a scale of 0-10 with ten meaning DON'T MISS IT! and 0 meaning DONT TOUCH IT! All opinions will relate only to the book's quality and functionality as it relates to the FOCUS and MISSION STATEMENT of Science for Success Seminars (see our website) 1. "Self-Help Stuff That Works" by Adam Khan, 1999. I just read an absolutely startling statistic. We Americans spent over 17 Billion dollars last year on over 2500 different self-improvement, self-help books! Man-o-Man that is why I'm in business. Wouldn't you like to help yourself ONCE and get it right for ALL TIMES! Permanent Self-Improvement! Motivation that lasts! Permanent Self-Motivation! We are striving for that goal for ALL of YOU with our website and research information. This book can help you on that journey. The author calls his book the "No bull! No Frills! No Hype-How to become more effective with your actions". I agree! The book is not totally neuroscience based, but it ain't bad. Need I say More? Rating: 8.9 2. "Cross-Train Your Brain" by Stephen D. Eiffert, 1999 The book will help you create new pathways of neurons combining logic and creativity. This in turn will help you achieve more with solutions created by you that are both bold and feasible! Should be read. Especially the section on Possibility Thinking. Rating: 8.5 For both of these books, see my notes on each in the Annotated Bibliography that is available on our website. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ D. SCIENCE FOR SUCCESS TECHNIQUES TIME-TABLE If you want to form the proper neuron connections within your brain to develop the new neurode patterns that will create your highest levels of achievement and success, you must follow a plan and schedule. Here is what you have to do. It is an intense 90-100 day plan to Science-Based PERMANENT SELF-MOTIVATION! 1. This may be the most important task of all, because it sets the stage for everything else that your brain does. From now on, anytime, everyday, anyplace, when someone asks you "How are you doing?" "How are you?", or any other such greeting or salutation, your answer MUST ALWAYS BE VERY POSITIVE! EVEN IF IT IS A LIE! Remember, we taught you that scientifically, you can lie your way to success, and creating new neuron patterns that turn this lie into reality! This is every day, every time, forever! Use the letters of the alphabet each day to set up your answers before you leave the house. Some days I use the letter "F", for "fantastic!", "fabulous!", "frisky!", etc. Other days I might use "T" for "terrific" or "tremendous". But you answer must be totally positive, fro now on, no matter what. Even when you don't feel positive! Your brain will form the new connections and you WILL become terrific. You will be less negative. You will become more healthy. It will work automatically after thirty days, but don't stop...ever! 2. You must take an inventory of what you say to yourself (as in S4S Technique #1) for at least 5 days, preferably 7 days. And one of these days must be a weekend day. If you skip a day...start over! You are going to be shocked at the comparison of positive to negative self-statements that you make to yourself. Email me with your results. The average is about 5 negatives to 1 positive. I am not kidding. Most people do not realize just how negative they are about themselves. And remember your nonconscious brain doesn't know the difference and believes everything that you say to yourself as being REAL. So the first step in correcting this is being aware of how bad it is.
