New Research Results: You CAN reduce the risk of Alzheimer's, and that isn't even the BEST NEWS! The New England Journal of Medicine, just this month, has published the results of a 20 year study conducted at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York. Findings: Those people who regularly take part in mentally challenging activities can reduce their risk of dementia (Alzheimer's) by a whopping 47-63%. And of course, those who were most active (four times per week vs. one time per week, for example), gained the most! The research Director, Dr. Joseph Verghese said that any challenging activity, such as solving crossword puzzles, playing cards, spelling words backwards, or even dancing, or reading pages upside down, can spur the brain to establish new connections, or perhaps, as Gary Small from UCLA indicates, even to grow NEW brain cells, which might compensate for any loss of brain cells because of a progressive disease such as Alzheimer's. Some critics however, such as Bill Thies from the Chicago Alzheimer's Association, caution that the "Use it or lose it" theory has not yet been totally proven scientifically. I wonder what more proof he needs? But regardless, the experts are saying, you don't need to wait for that proof: you must build fun, mentally challenging activities into your daily life! Keep your brain active, and vary that regular challenging activity, and you 'may' protect yourself against future memory loss. NOW HERE is the REST of the STORY! If you are interested in developing permanent self-motivation skills and the great success and achievements that go with it, the above research is great news. Do you see it? The scientists are looking for cures and treatments for Alzheimer's, but YOU can take this same information and results, and turn them into techniques for permanent self-motivation! When you attempt a new task, or strive to reach any goal, the more neuron connections you have, the greater your chances of success. And the more neuron connections you create by using the 9 Science for Success Techniques, the less likely you are to "lose it", and your motivation and achievements will become 'Permanent'. "Future Memory" is the term given by Dr. Richard Restak, neuroscientist, to refer to your ability to look forward to future goals and keep them in mind in the now (present), so that nothing can sidetrack you from your goals. You as a human, are the only creature that is not limited by space and time. You can already imagine yourself in possession of the things you want, or reaching the goals you set to achieve. In recent neuroscience research studies using a PET scanner to image brain activity to see that which has never been seen before: brain activity for "pure thoughts" alone without physical movement or activity associated with that thought. At the Institute of Neurology in London, Dr Richard Frackowiak and others, have found HUGE implications from the PET scan studies. They have provided sound evidence of the benefits of mental rehearsal! It is now absolutely proven scientifically, what professional and very skilled athletes have secretly known for some time: Imagining a complex or skillful movement, over and over in your mind, can actually help to physically or mentally to improve its performance! The PET scans have placed this heretofore 'theory' or intuitions on firm neurological grounds. The same neurons in your brain are used for mental practice and for real practice! For example. the process of imagining yourself going through the motions of a complex musical or athletic performance activates brain areas that improve your performance when you thereafter DO the activity. WHAT AN ASTOUNDING THOUGHT! If you practice this future memory before you undertake new projects. You are creating new neuron patterns (My golf swing is ALWAYS perfect in my mind!) that are perfect for your actual DOING of the act to follow! First, think about what you want to achieve. Second, come up with specific achievable steps to facilitate your goal. Then, regularly review the steps leading to the desired goal and clearly envision yourself possessing what you desire. What I learned about the Science of Success at my 40th High School Reunion. I grew up and went to high school in the wonderful small village of Germantown, Ohio. My dad was a Minister there before his untimely death in an auto accident when I was just 13. Germantown is a very warm and friendly town, where you knew just about everyone, and that was okay. I don't know why, but every memory I have of my youth always seemed to be a sunny day. My wife and I went up to Ohio for the 40th Reunion of the GHS class of '63. We had 66 kids in our graduating class. 44 girls and 22 boys. (I loved those odds!). About 25-30 of our class returned for the reunion. Some of the 'kids' I hadn't seen since high school. Our school was not unlike most schools. You had your "clicks" and your outcasts, your athletes, your cheerleaders and your "eggheads". And as the years pass, you lose neuron connections that could recall all of school year memories. And all of a sudden, there no longer are any lines between you. Only a common bond of love and friendship. So you spend time reminiscing and putting your brain on overload to re-fire those old memory connections. It's a wonderful feeling. I made and renewed many, many hours of past history, and in the process learned a couple of valuable lessons. Sometimes our distance from an experience, increases the size of the achievement (or the fish, as the case may be) in our mind's eye. All those things we accomplished in school, somehow seem so insignificant now, but I know they're not. They laid the neuron connections for our future memories, our future success. And in that regard, what a wonderful job Germantown, Ohio did for the Class of '63. As I look at our classmates now, I see only success stories; every one by definition unique to them, has reached the pinnacle of a life-time of achievement. It's the Journey you know! And it's all relative. What a wonderful group of people. And each so fascinating! I only wish I had known then, what I know now. I would have loved them more. Find the success in everyone! 1. Any Atkins Diet Book! Dr Atkins. Yes that Dr. Atkins! Yes, I know, I know! Two of the late Dr Atkins, diet books are in the Top Ten on the New York Times Best-Seller list.
