B.  SCIENCE OF SELF-MOTIVATION NEWS.

1. Research May Revolutionize Learning!

Based on an article copyrighted by the Philadelphia Inquirer, and just released, it is essential that each of us learn and use the Science for Success Techniques to develop permanent self-motivation skills and therefore reach our highest achievement and success levels NOW!

Why?  Educators in the United States say they are on the verge of a "schoolhouse revolution" that will greatly increase how much students will learn.  They are beginning to use research findings-into how the brain works and how we learn- to improve teaching methods and help many more children learn better and much more!

The Newspaper quoted Dr. Joseph O'Brien, the superintendent of a large Pennsylvania school district, which has recently adopted many programs based in brain research. Dr. O'Brien and others indicate that advances in brain research are revolutionizing what teachers know about how a student's brain works and how they learn best.

"It will require a fusion of science, brain research and education to figure out what works, O'Brien said.  "This is a very exciting time."

But, as always, when new discoveries are being made, there are the sceptical and the negative.  Some experts caution that educators should go slow, because science findings can be exaggerated or misinterpreted. But certainly, neuroscience has the potential to change educational practices for the better.

There is a catchphrase growing in popularity among progressive educators called "rewiring the brain", that is based on research done at Stanford University which has greatly helped dyslexic children learn to overcome that challenge!

Other research is helping schools develop programs to greatly increase student's ability and mental skills to focus, for memory, and decision-making.

These new decision-makers are your future competition in business and industry.  Do you see it?  The entire country and eventually the world will soon see the benefits of the science of permanent self-motivation.  GET THERE FIRST!  Practice what you read here and in the CDs and Systems so that you can stay ahead of the soon to be armies of thinkers who base their learning and achievements on neuroscience.

Ain't it great to know you are on the right path and making the right journey!

Enjoy the Ride!

2.  Now comes great hope, resources and solutions!  For all who suffer from or who have an interest in Dyslexia---comes news from Dr Robert Sylwester. (the researcher and author of one of my favorite books, "A Celebration of Neurons")

Dr. Sally Shaywitz, a well-known researcher in the field of dyslexia has just published a fine, non-technical (thank goodness!) practical resource for parents, educators and any others who confront dyslexia.  It is entitled:

Overcoming Dyslexia: A New and Complete Science-Based Program

If this is a problem that you or a loved-one faces, you will appreciate the clearly written text that explains how the brain processes reading.  Once you understand the "how" and "why", the biology of the brain, the mystery disappears!  The book is filled with great step by step advice on how to remedy dyslexia, and Dr Sylwester, who's opinion I totally trust, says it is the best book he has yet seen on the subject.  Although I have not yet read it.  Go for it!

3. NASCAR's  "Pepsi 400" Stock Car Race is run at Daytona International Speedway at night. . . .but the drivers are not in the dark. . trust me!

The Fantastic brain-science information I learned about Science for Success Technique # 7, Trust the Darkness, at NASCAR's  "Pepsi 400" Stock Car Race at Daytona.

This past summer, my wife and I went over to Daytona International Speedway (about an hour's drive from our house) to watch the NASCAR Race along with about 170,000 other crazy people!  Before last summer I had never been to a NASCAR race, and after going to one, you can't keep me away!  It is great fun to watch.  And it was great fun to see someone win other than Dale Jr. or the other DEI car.  Even my wife's favorite driver, Kyle Petty, who hasn't won in years was up in 6th place, just before the finish, when he ran out of gas and had to coast across the line down in 23rd place.

Try as hard as I can, I just can't always stop thinking about the brain and neuroscience, even at a great event like Daytona.  If you will recall, or as you will see from our Educational Systems, your brain has several levels of thinking occurring all at the same time.  Only one of those levels are you aware of, and that is your conscious level.  Your other levels of thought occur in the nonconscious regions of the Cortex, and you are not even aware of these thoughts.  However, your nonconscious brain sees, hears, smells, just as does your conscious brain.  Because you are aware of your conscious thinking, your 'mind' processes what you see at the conscious level to give it meaning to you.  This process takes time.  In fact, your conscious neuron impulses have been measured in research to travel relatively slowly as far as impulses go, at about 120-125 mph.

This creates a huge problem for a NASCAR and other race car drivers.  Why?  Because their car is going near 200 mph! That's why!  And if you can only consciously "think" at a rate of 125 mph, but you're traveling at 200 mph.  LOOKOUT!  So how in the heck do these guys do it?  How can they survive a race?

Enter your fantastic nonconscious brain, your NCB, or your "Nancy" as I affectionately call it.  The neuron impulses in your nonconscious cortex, because they don't have to stop and give meaning to every impulse they carry, these impulses can travel at speeds up to 80-100 times faster than your conscious impulses.  THIS IS A VERY GOOD THING!  Did you know that your nonconscious brain can see?  Did you know in fact that when you drive your car, you are doing so about 95% of the time with your nonconscious neurons.

Do you see how important this is?  When you are driving down your residential street and a ball bounces out suddenly into the road in front of your car, you hit the brakes instantly, without conscious thought.  You saw the ball with your NCB.  You didn't have to "think" about the fact that there may be a child running after the ball;  you didn't have to "think" about moving your foot to the brake pedal.  It was, as the race car drivers tell me, all instinct.

So when a race car driver is going 200 mph, and he or she has to react to a sudden emergency, they totally depend upon their nonconscious brain to make the right choice and act for them automatically.  They must "Trust the Darkness" as I call it in Science for Success Technique #7.  They must leave out their conscious perceptions and go with their "instincts".  Literally, it is a matter of survival for them.

These neuron connections and wiring has been built up over years of racing, and forming memory neurode patterns that can, in nearly all situations, bring them an answer up from their nonconscious memory banks, that is a good answer, a good decision, one that can and must be trusted.

Can you learn to do the same on your own "race tracks" of life?  Yes!  If you can learn to Trust the Darkness, and the decisions that come from your "Nancy"!  It will lead you to great achievements, success, triumphs, and victories. We teach you how in all of our Systems and Tools!

C.  BOOK REVIEW

Each month we will review a few of the books and/or research articles and studies that we have read. All of these books will have been published in just the last few years, since about 95% of what science now knows about the brain has been discovered in just the last 4-5 years! We will rate these books on a scale of 0-10 with ten meaning DON'T MISS IT! and 0 meaning DONT TOUCH IT! All opinions will relate only to the book's quality and functionality as it relates to the FOCUS and MISSION STATEMENT of Science for Success Systems and Seminars (see our website)

1.  Mozart's Brain and the Fighter Pilot, Richard Restak M.D.  2001

I picked this book up at the airport last month on my trip back form the old High School Reunion.  I am so glad I did.  In fact there is just one section in this book that warrants its reading by you.  We discussed it some in the last issue of the Newsletter.  "Future Memory"  This really is the basis for a lot of our material on Permanent Self-Motivation.  In other words Restak, through the research shows, that your brain's ability to visualize the future, enables you to create that future into reality.  The first 100 pages of this great start to a book, explains this in great, understandable scientific detail, that even I can understand.  It is a fantastic summary of the neuroscience of achievement and success.  However, it starts to go downhill from there.  Almost as if the author's battery died.  In Chapter 13 on page 113,  the good stuff disappears and the author goes into a series of chapters on "exercises" he designed to unleash your brain's potential.  But to me, he fizzles out.  The exercises are hard to understand, and the procedures almost impossible to follow.  Too bad, 'cause the book started out so great!  But still worth your time.  Just read the first half of the book twice! There is one very good exercise in which you can actually, physically experience the fact that your nonconscious brain cannot tell real from imagined, truth from a lie.  Don't miss the table-tapping exercise!  RATING: 8.0

E.  SCIENCE FOR SUCCESS TECHNIQUES TIME-TABLE

If you want to form the proper neuron connections within your brain to develop the new neurode patterns that will create your highest levels of achievement and success, you must follow a plan and schedule.

Here is what you have to do.  It is an intense 90-100 day plan to  Science-Based PERMANENT SELF-MOTIVATION!

3.  You must spend 24-30 days on S4S Technique #2, stomping your ANTS and turning or channeling them into positive positives!  This is absolutely key and essential!  Remember, the brain needs about 30 days to create enough new connections to create a new habit!  for A CONCENTRATED EFFORT OF 3-4 WEEKS, YOU MUST STOP EVERY NEGATIVE THOUGHT THAT YOU HAVE, "DEAD IN ITS TRACKS" AND TURN IT INTO A POSITIVE THOUGHT.  do not UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES JUST STOP THE THOUGHT WITHOUT TURNING IT POSITIVE.  THIS LITERALLY, THE SCIENTISTS SAY, CAN CAUSE THE BUILDUP OF TOXINS IN YOUR SYSTEMS THAT CAN CAUSE ILLNESS, HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND EVEN DEATH!

Get yourself some means to physically force you to snap to attention whenever you start a negative thought or sentence.  Some of our students, wear a rubber-band on their wrist, which they snap against there arm each time they start a negative.  Other students stomp their foot or slap their knee, or even slap their own face to stop the negatives.  You find what works best for you, but you must do it for 3-4 weeks and you must turn EVERY one of those negatives into a positive.

4.  AFTER your 30 days of Stomping your ANTS, you are ready to spend 3-7 days creating your dreams and goals, and creating IN WRITING (but not necessarily just words!) the specifics and deadlines for your long-term goals (5-10 year goals); your medium-term goals (1-5 year goals); and your short-term goals (1 day to 1 month to 1 year goals). Here are the absolute rules for all goals:

1. A Positive Positive! Not in the negative form.
2. It must be personal!
3. It must be in PRESENT tense.
4. Must be written in an achieving manner.
5. Must not make comparisons.
6. Must use action words.
7. Must use words that trigger emotion!
8. Must be VERY SPECIFIC!
9. Must be believable. (but not necessarily believed)

5.  After formulating your goals, you are now ready for one of your most important 30 day periods in your life!  You must now create and repeat your INNERSTATES More on this one next time!! (see our Systems and Tools for how these MUST BE FORMATTED!)
