S4S Technique #5:  Trigger a Thunderstorm. This just might be the most powerful S4S Technique of all!  Recent research has clearly found that if you are in an increased emotional state when you learn something new, or when you are forming a memory, that new set of neuron connections will be stronger, greater, larger in number, and will have a relatively lower firing threshold.  See details and time commitment schedule below.

B.  SCIENCE OF SELF-MOTIVATION NEWS.

1.  Breaking News:

     a.  Neuroscientists are experimenting with a chip placed in the brain that can act and function similarly to the human hippocampus!  Since your brain's hippocampus plays a very active role in memory, focus, and attention, this could become a revolutionary breakthrough in the treatment of memory loss.  Stay tuned!  We will keep you informed.

     b.  There also is current research being done (as reported in Science) that indicates a possible breakthrough in the treatment of depression which may very well be as simple as the creation of new brain cells (neurogenesis) through a regimen of mental exercises.  Stay tuned!  We will keep you informed.

     c.  New brain-research confirms that the repetition of statements over and over forms new neural pathways (neurodes), that can subsequently fire as a "belief", and that when this neural "belief" pattern fires, it will trigger new activity or actions on the part of the individual, directly in line and consistent with this new belief!  WOW!  WHO DIDN'T ALREADY KNOW THIS!  This was first written about by Claude M Bristol in his 1930's book, "The Magic of Believing"   Stay tuned!  We DO keep you informed. (see book reviews below!)

*       *       *

2.  Call for Questions!

In one or two of the next Newsletters we will be doing our annual "Question and Answer" issue.  Therefore, this is a call for questions from you to be included and answered in that issue.  Send us your "Science of Permanent Self-Motivation" Questions.  The tougher the better.  If we include your question in the upcoming Newsletter, we will send you a free gift from our Systems and Tools!  .  So get them in to us ASAP!

3.  10 Things NOT to do.

Last Newsletter we gave you our list of ten things you must do "from now on" to help you reach and maintain your highest level of achievement and success. Then we told you we would list the ten things that you must NOT do ever again.  That was a trick!  If you have been following our research-based teachings you know that you should NEVER make a list of what NOT to do.  We asked you our subscribers to sent us your ideas as to why you should NEVER make a list of what NOT to do.  Your response was overwhelming, and every email had great information.  Here are just a few of the best answers:

a.  From Bob Collier- Australia:

NEVER MAKE A LIST OF THE 10 THINGS YOU MUST NEVER DO!

The unconscious 5/6ths of our brain that controls our behaviour thinks in
pictures. Whatever we say to ourselves, it will automatically formulate a
mental picture from the information received that it will then use to
determine an appropriate response.

If I write a goal that states, for example, "I must never lose my temper
with my children", my unconscious brain can't create a picture of "I must
never" but it CAN create a picture of "lose my temper with my children",
which is what it does (it's an automatic process based on information
received). Then I will find myself consciously fighting my image of losing
my temper with my children, which creates emotional conflict, tension and
anxiety, which may just lead to me ... losing my temper with my children!

Better to say something like "I'm always calm and patient with my children."
My unconscious brain can then create a picture of "calm and patient with my
children" and now all I have to do is relax and allow myself to act upon my
mental image ... and be calm and patient with my children! :)

If I made a list of "10 Things I Must Never Do", I would simply end up with
ten mental images going around in my head doing nothing else but causing me
emotional conflict and anxiety - and I'd be getting frustrated as well
because I'm not getting what I want.

But I wouldn't be getting what I want because I wouldn't be thinking about
what I want!

In order to get what we want, we have to direct our attention to getting it
and that means we must word our goals so that they produce the CORRECT
mental image - an image of what we WANT, not what we DON'T want! - from
which our unconscious brain can then make judgments about subsequent input
from our environment in order to create the behaviour that ultimately
produces the experience that matches our mental image.

That's probably why a "Things To Do" list isn't called a "Things Not To Do"
list!

b.  From Mark Ley-USA:

So why shouldn't we focus on the negative? One simple reason. Like attracts
like. We get what we focus on even if it's unintentional. That actually the
shame for most people in society. They get no productive results in their
life without even being aware of it.
Even in something as simple as a list there is great power. The sooner we
open ourselves to the awareness of focus, the sooner we'll realize the
success we desire.

c.  From Joe Park, Maryland-USA

Your brain is a problem-solver and accepts all input -- whether deliberate
by you or automatic from your environment -- as true. The non-conscious
portion of the brain does not filter out negatives! So, if you are telling
yourself that you must NOT eat sweets, your brain says in effect, "Ok! I
eat sweets!" If you tell yourself, "I will not bounce any more checks!"
your brain looks for ways to make "I bounce more checks!" a true statement.

AAAAYYYIIAAHH!

D.  From Rosie Harrison-United Kingdom

Our conscious works with whatever you choose to pay attention to - our subconscious mind gets on with our life using the programs - or thoughts that we have stored.  Don't believe me - do you feel the temperature of the air on your skin? The texture of your clothes on your skin? Not until I mentioned it and you brought in into your conscious awareness. The thoughts that we stock our minds with become the programs that our subconscious uses to filter the mountains of information that come our way. Remember the last time you were looking for a new car or house? All of a sudden you started to notice car adverts, houses that you liked - because you had told your subconscious that you were interested in a new car or house.

Writing goals, saying them out loud tells your subconscious what to look out for what to bring to your    attention out of all the images sounds and thoughts you have every day. Tell your self that you are good at spotting opportunities and ideas will come into your mind. Tell yourself that you are loved and living and you begin to notice when people say something friendly and supportive - you will act as though people will find you loveable. In the 60s it was called good vibes. Written thoughts are the blueprint for the subconscious letting it know what it is important - think of it as giving the perfect instructions to the perfect secretary

         E.  From Alaine Pierre-France

Because otherwise you're asking and programming your nonconscious brain
, which doesn't make the difference between what's right ( positive ) and
what's wrong ( negative ), for you to be, do and have those negative things

We are, do and have what we think about.

      F.  Freda Patterson-USA

Our conscious brain understands negatives, but
our subconscious brain  doesn't. The conscious brain
fires in one spot, the subconscious brain fires in 5 areas at the same time, so it is five times more powerful.
It would read "I am not lazy", as "I am lazy", because it
cannot process the "not". One would be programming themselves for failure.

       G.  Michelle Howard-Oregon-USA

The nonconscious brain doesn't process the negative part.  If you say "Don't hit the ball in the water", all the brain hears is "Hit the ball in the water"!

But I am confused.  In your list of 10 things you must do, numbers 2-9 have "never" in them.  This is confusing me

Michelle, you are absolutely right and we are going to fix that mistake of mine right now.  Here again are the 10 things you must do every day from now on.--REWORDED--to eliminate the negative "never"

10 things you must do:

1.  From now on, every time anyone asks you how you are, the out loud answer is always and forever a very, very positive positive! [Great!  Terrific!  Fantastic!] NO MATTER HOW YOU REALLY FEEL!  It doesn't matter!  You are trying to change you!  FOREVER!

          2.  From now on, you commit to taking full and total responsibility for your circumstances, your results and how you feel! It will always be your responsibility and that of your brain cells and no one else's!

          3. From now on, you will always learn new things everyday!

          4. From now on, you will stop yourself from completing any and every negative thought or words, and turn them into a positive, before you go on to anything else!

          5.  From now on,  you will always every day do something new, strange, crazy, silly, out of the box, embarrassing, or that is otherwise "not like you".

          6.  From now on, you will always, set a goal by putting it down in writing.

          7.  From now on, you will willingly and eagerly fail at something important every day---and learn from it!

          8.  From now on, you will every day of your life, tell at least two people that you love them. (one should always be you, even if you don't believe it yet!)

          9.   From now on, you will every day of your life, do an exercise regimen for your brain or your body. (preferably both!)

          10.  From now on, you will stop and look to see what everyone else is doing, and then choose to probably do the opposite!

Thanks for your help Michelle!

C.  BOOK REVIEW

Each month we will review one or more of the books and/or research articles and studies that we have read. All of these books will have been published in just the last few years, since about 95% of what science now knows about the brain has been discovered in just the last 4-5 years! We will rate these books on a scale of 0-10 with ten meaning DON'T MISS IT! and 0 meaning DON'T TOUCH IT! All opinions will relate only to the book's quality and functionality as it relates to the FOCUS and MISSION STATEMENT of Science for Success Systems (see our website)

1.  The Magic of Believing. Clause Bristol 1938.

We mention this old classic here because much of what the author wrote those many years ago has been confirmed by modern brain-research.  Obviously, however, the book does not give the scientific foundation for such statements as the one listed above, (see Breaking News section) but it is worth reading from an anecdotal standpoint.  The author uses many, many stories to emphasize his point that affirmations generate beliefs, and beliefs generate action.  Pretty good formula.  RATING: 6.3

2.  The Essential 55. Rules for Discovering the Successful Student in Every Child Ron Clark 2003.

This book is on the New York Times Best-Seller list, so I picked it up in the airport on my holiday and read it cover to cover in one flight.  Here at Science for Success Systems, we certainly are interested in student success, both academically and athletically. (we will have upcoming TeleSeminars on Science-based Coaching Success and Science-based Student Success.) And even though we knew going in that this book would not be brain-science based, we had hoped for more than the book delivered.  Written by a very successful elementary teacher from North Carolina, his 55 essential rules seem to be more discipline related than student learning-success related, and of course no mention of the brain's role in learning is undertaken.  The biggest disappointment to me was that the author did not include our Rule No. 2 (see "10 Things" above), which I think is the most lacking skill in the younger generation today.  Read it if you must.  I won't read it again.  RATING: 3.0

D.  Science for Success Techniques:

Science for Success Technique #5:  Trigger a Thunderstorm. This just might be the most powerful S4S Technique of all!  Recent research has clearly found that if you are in an increased emotional state when you learn something new, or when you are forming a memory, that new set of neuron connections will be stronger, greater, larger in number, and will have a relatively lower firing threshold and will fire easily for 30-40-50 years!

Triggering a Thunderstorm should be done each and every time you are doing maintenance on ANY S4S Techniques.  From setting goals to turning on your VCR, these neuron patterns are enhanced if you are in an emotional state when you create the new connections.  Emotionally moving music, An inspiring or sad movie, a 5-10 minute visualization of your greatest triumph, whether it has happened yet or not , will ALL generate the additional neurotransmitter and protein release that will act as a fertilizer to create stronger-PERMANENT-neuron connections, which will lead you to actions of greater achievement and success.

Therefore, there is no set time period to "Trigger a Thunderstorm".  But you should use this technique any time you are working on your other S4S Techniques.

Next Time:  Turn on Your VCR.  How do you do it?  How do you practice it? And how often?
